Pitts
Chapel United Methodist Church - 600 North Benton Ave.
A Methodist Episcopal church was started here by a slave in 1847. The congregation worshipped in several places until 1863 when, under the ministry of Rev. Edgar Pitts, a frame building was built on Water St., a little east of Benton Ave. The church was called Pitts Church. This was replaced by a brick structure in 1873. Later the church was sold and demolished and a new structure built at the corner of Benton Ave. and Tampa St. in 1912. Approved: 9/13/76 |
